This is the third part of a series on Consistency. To read the other parts, please visit our Consistency Page. We have also have a series on HumilityAwareness , Stillness and Discipline so please check those out as well if you are interested. This series on humility is the fourth series in our Tao Te Ching Exploration Project. Throughout this project, we will be discussing some of the basic principles brought up throughout the Tao Te Ching. The principles we will cover are Awareness, Stillness, Discipline, Humility, Flexibility, Consistency, Connection, Service and Leadership. I am sure that there are many other principles that have been discussed throughout the text, but these are the nine topics that I am choosing to focus on over the next several months. I relate to each principle by focusing our attention on each of the nine chakras. This nine chakra model is based on the Q’ero Shamans’ chakra system that is explained in depth in Dr. Alberto Villoldo’s book, Shaman, Healer, Sage.

In this system, the chakras extend outside of our human form, which allow us to recognize our greater aspects of being. With nine chakras and nine disciplines, we will end up with 81 essays on living with the Tao in mind throughout every aspect of our being. (Since there are 81 chapters in the Tao Te Ching and nine is a completion number, I felt this was a fitting tribute.)   I hope that you are enjoying the series and will continue to explore with us throughout the rest of the project.

The Third Chakra: Personal Power

We all have moments when we feel down on ourselves, down on our luck.

That feeling of confidence goes up and down. There are people that, no matter when you speak to them, they exude confidence. You wonder how on earth they are feeling so confident all the time. It is not so much about whether or not they are feeling confident. That is not where the consistency comes in!

People we consider brave consistently show a confident face to the world.

I am not talking about faking it, here. I am talking about recognizing that, no matter the circumstances, you have to face your problems. No matter how you feel about something, it is there. If you are going through a crappy situation, regardless of how you feel about it, you still have to go through it.

Courageous people just brave through things.

Courage is not a lack of fear. Everyone has fear. Brave people just move through it. After lots of practice, it gets easier and you actually become less fearful. Working on this third chakra is about developing that for yourself, that consistent push to get you through the tougher moments in life.

I was reading a post on Tynan.com, about a key to not quitting. He said to let yourself quit two times in your mind before you let yourself quit something. Don’t let yourself quit until the third time. If you are writing and you feel like quitting, or meditating, you want to quit, that is the first time, keep going… the second time, keep going. I thought that was an interesting example of consistency.

Push through.

You can be a little more excellent if you can push forward. Think about that in terms of your life. What are some ways that you can push through that fear or that sludginess that holds you back? To move beyond those things that you have fears about – say water, for example. How can you get yourself to stay in the water just a little bit longer if you have a fear of drowning? What are some ways that you can push your fears back and have more courage because you’ve pushed back the stopping point?

As you begin to tackle these areas of your life where fear has run rampant, you will become that person that exudes confidence to all of those around you. If you don’t do it for yourself, do it for them.
